CONFIDENTIALITY

All information gathered in counselling sessions is treated as confidential and will not be disclosed to a third party without your informed, voluntary and written consent. In certain situations, the law requires the counsellor to breach confidentiality, such as: if someone is threatening to harm himself or herself or another person, or when a child is in need of protection, or if records are subpoenaed by a court.

 

BENEFITS AND LIMITS OF TELECOUNSELLING/TELETHERAPY

As the Nova Scotia Health Authority wrote on March 24, 2020:
“Tele-mental health has been shown to be as effective as face-to-face services, empowering for clients and patients, and to have high satisfaction rates in terms of the experience for people and their families. The exception to this would be when a person’s needs require face-to-face assessment or treatment – this is a decision made by the provider and the patient.”

Many Nova Scotians have found that phone and video meetings are thoroughly helpful when provided by experienced professional.

SECURITY

All video sessions are currently held using Zoom, a platform with the highest level of encryption (end-to-end), plus additional security features to ensure that only the intended, scheduled client(s) can gain entry to the meeting.

All information gathered in counselling sessions is stored securely in locked cabinets or on encrypted devices. We do not permit recording of sessions.

Nevertheless, please be aware that with any transmission of information over the Internet, there is some risk of access by third parties, due to potential threats such as hackers and computer viruses.
