Childhood wounds happen when a child experiences
abandonment, rejection, humiliation, betrayal or
injustice. These wounds can occur even when the
child is not actually abandoned or rejected, but fears
it and feels afraid and alone. Because the child’s
brain is still developing, these wounds can
profoundly affect the child’s self perception and way
of relating to others, creating patterns which often
continue into adulthood.
When a child experiences prolonged, repeated
interpersonal trauma, such as chronic emotional,
physical or sexual abuse or neglect by parents, the
child’s attachment is disrupted, and impaired brain
development and Complex Trauma may result. If
untreated, this can lead to Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) in
adulthood, involving emotional flashbacks, shame,
harsh self criticism, and disturbed relationships.
Counselling and therapy can help overcome the
harmful effects of childhood wounds and Complex
PTSD and lead to greater self compassion.
Counselling &
Psychotherapy:
Counselling and psychotherapy are often viewed as
being on a continuum.
Counselling deals directly with day-to-day issues to
find coping strategies, skills and solutions in a
short term framework.
Psychotherapy resolves more deep-seated,
longstanding issues that may underlie problems in
several different areas in life.
